Founded in 1992, Chartwell is a New York based private investment firm that has completed over $2 billion of transactions. We invest in middle market and lower-middle market companies with strong management teams and compelling business models that can benefit from our strategic, financial and operational support. We have frequently partnered with entrepreneurs and families, as well as Fortune 500 companies (Ford, Mobil Oil, Avis Budget Group, Cendant) to bring large company experience to middle market environments, and we take an active role in the corporate development of our portfolio companies.
Chartwell reviews investment opportunities across a wide spectrum of industries, including manufacturing and light industrials, business services, distribution, building products, consumer products and energy and natural resources. Transaction types include recapitalizations, buyouts and growth equity investments in niche market leaders.
We have a long-term investment horizon without structural requirements to exit investments in 3-5 years like traditional private equity funds. We typically use modest leverage (less than 50% debt financing) when investing in companies in order to mitigate risk and allow management to focus on the business, not the balance sheet. While we are not day-to-day operators of our portfolio companies, we are actively involved in strategic decision making and other areas where we can be helpful to management and the company.
Chartwell is sensitive to topics and issues specific to family and entrepreneurially-owned businesses. We understand generational transfer and succession issues. We respect the unique culture that exists within a company and that contributes to its success. We are disciplined in our approach, yet flexible and nimble when opportunities present themselves. We have a sincere passion for helping companies grow and succeed.
